I have been on 3 club trips to the alps and have always enjoyed it. You can go for as long or as short a time as you like as the areas and rivers often come into condition at different times . It is perfectly feasible to go for a week and paddle everyday if you are willing to drive through the night. We have always used the Channel tunnel and found it to be excellent. Remember to book through someone like Ferrysavers (or RailSavers) and get big discounts.
Apart from the great rivers you get great weather, amazing food and a chance to chill in beautiful surroundings. The rivers in France tend to be small, steep and fast with some notable exceptions like the Ubaye and Durance. Italy has some great creeking and Austria and Switzerland also have some big volume rivers such as the mighty Inn and the Oetz.
